Groton Reads & Eats
Groton, MA, Feb. 12, 2020 —
The Groton Public Library is kicking off Groton’s 16th Annual Community-Wide Reading Event this month, but with a twist. The library will be celebrating both reading and eating with our 2020 Groton Reads…AND EATS!

In honor of this theme, there will be a wide variety of food-related programs. Topics range from culinary films to cooking programs, actual feasts, and kitchen gear 101. Events will be held at the library and at other venues around town - from Forge & Vine to Dolce Amar, The Groton Center, Blackbird and Salt & Light Cafes, Luina Greine Farm, and the New England Shirdi Sai Temple.

There will be events for all ages. Adults, teens, kids, and families will have opportunities to discuss food-related books. They can also learn from hands-on programs in local farming, cake decorating, bread making, healthy cooking, and dessert or snack preparation.

For this year’s community read, the library has departed from the usual one book to offer five titles so there is a book to appeal to every reader. Our Readers’ Menu:

  • The Kitchen Daughter by Jael Henry
  • The Dirty Life by Kristen Kimball
  • Food Rules by Michael Pollan
  • Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl
  • The Kitchen Counter Cooking School by Kathleen Flinn

Another first this year will be the ability to earn a discount at participating businesses. Check out a Groton Reads book at the Groton Public Library to receive a pin. Wear it to a participating establishment in March and receive a discount. Each one is different - it could be a free coffee with purchase (Dolce Amar) or 15% off food (Forge & Vine, Salt & Light). The complete list will be posted and updated on gpl.org.

Registration is required for nearly every event, as interest is anticipated to be high. To give everyone a chance for a spot, registration opens on Saturday, February 15, at 10 am for several events. (Sign up on gpl.org’s online calendar or call 978-448-1167.) Also, events with limited capacities will be restricted to residents only until one week before the event. For events requiring residency, a library card # will be needed as well as an email address. Additionally, there is a cost to attend two events: $35 at Forge & Vine and $10 at The Groton Center’s Italian Night. Fortunately, most events are free, thanks to the generous support of the GPL Endowment Trust.

Some events are open for sign-ups now. Register for The Groton Center events (except Liz Barbour) by calling 978-448-1170, Mon-Fri 8-4. A few library events welcome drop-ins if seating is available.

GPL staff is delighted to be partnering with Groton restaurants, business owners, and organizations for this event. We are grateful for their participation, as it adds an even greater sense of community and celebration to this year’s event. Finally, as a community-wide reading (and eating) event, why not host your own special event with your friends, neighbors, groups, and/or organizations? The library will be happy to provide support with materials, books, and/or space to meet.

Groton Reads & Eats will run February 15 through March 31. For more information, please visit the library, go to gpl.org, or call 978-448-1167.
